ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE follows two teenage boys as they develop an unlikely friendship—but it’s much more than that. It’s an exploration of relationships, family, masculinity, coming of age, and coming out that’s as nuanced as it is powerful.

The book centers on Ari and Dante, two Latino boys with different ways of relating to the world and their respective families. Ari is shy and shut off, with a desperate yearning to know his brother in prison. Dante is confident, outspoken, and on perfect terms with his worldly parents. As they grow closer, they learn from one another, protect one another, and learn about themselves—up to and including the realization that their friendship might mean even more than they thought.

My wife, Tess, recommended this book to me and ten pages in I already regretted not reading it sooner. Author Benjamin Alire Sáenz is a powerful voice with a beautiful story to tell. Don’t wait as long as I did.
